Calamity

Calamity is the third and final book in the Reckoners trilogy. I loved the series from start to finish and everything about Calamity was just perfect.

David has grown so much throughout the series. No longer is he just the young boy with a heart full of revenge set on destroying every Epic he can. Instead David has learned that Epics are fighting their own personal battles all the time. Always curious and ever eager to learn David works at leading the Reckoners to saving non-epics and Epics alike.

While none of the story is told from Megan's point of view I still felt like I got to know her well. Megan is a character, despite enjoying guns and kicking butt she is still at home in dresses and enjoys being a girl. I would love for a novella told from her point of view to get to understand her better.

Fast paced writing, action packed scenes, with lots of twists and turns made me not want to put down Calamity. The ending fit the whole series perfectly and without a doubt The Reckoners trilogy is one of the best written trilogies I have ever read.

Friday 56: Calamity

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most Friday 56 post.

 Calamity ebook 56%:

"Sparks," Megan said. "How do they get this all in here? They redo this every week?"

I am only a couple chapters in so this scene is way ahead and I have no idea what Megan is referring to but I want to know.

Wolfheart

Wolfheart was packed full of lore with lots of characters and action. It took me almost a month to read Wolfheart which surprised me since I am pretty up to date on World of Warcraft lore however I had to look up several minor characters to keep up with everything going on. This kind of annoyed me at times so I would put down Wolfheart and not go back to it for several days.

I wanted more about King Varian and from the title I assumed he would take center stage but I was mistaken. Instead the night elves are the stars and while I like the night elves I seem to always end up reading the most lore books about them. I want to branch out.

The writing was smooth and well done. Everything was action packed and full of suspense.

Kiss and Spell

Kiss and Spell is the seventh and final book in the Magic Inc series. While I loved the overall ending of the series I was sort of bored with the plot of Kiss and Spell.

Katie has been through an array of incidents, going from being a magical immune, to being normal, to finally having magical powers. I loved how she got to experience it all and Katie seemed to love it as well. Through the series Katie went from thinking she was seeing funky things in New York to learning about a magical world and herself. Throughout her experiences she became a strong confident person who was not afraid to voice her opinion.

Owen is such a cutie, despite being one of the most powerful wizards alive, he is gentle and kind. A major softy who gets embarrassed easily. Even though everything was told from Katie's point of view I feel like I got to know Owen well and learn the struggles he went through with having parents who did not always make the right choices.

Sadly overall the plot of Kiss and Spell was boring and repetitive. Only time I have encountered that in the Magic Inc series but the last chapter made up for everything else. It was just a perfect ending to Katie's story.

The Chess Queen Enigma

The Chess Queen Enigma is the third book in the Stoker and Holmes series.

Like previous books in the series the story is told both from Mina and Evaline's points of view.

Mina is the niece of the famous Sherlock Holmes and inspiring to do nothing but follow her uncle with solving mysteries despite what society says is proper for a young lady. While Mina does care for her reputation she is willing to bend the rules when it comes to gathering information pertaining to a case. I love this about Mina, despite trying hard at being a proper young lady Mina lets who she is shine through including her faults. While overbearing, a know it all, and full of pride Mina is still my favorite of the two heroines.

Evaline's birthright is carrying the bloodline of a famous vampire hunter. Despite having finally killed a vampire Evaline is not living high off it instead it haunts her. This makes Evaline feel far more human and I enjoyed learning how finally practicing her trade affected her. Unlike Mina Evaline's style is to rush in and think of the consequences for it later. This has gotten in her in trouble several times and slowly Evanline seems to be realizing this.

Colleen Gleason continues to amaze with her elegant writing, world building, and complex plot development.  As the Stoker and Holmes series continues I love every book on a whole new level. Without a doubt Stoker and Holmes is my favorite of the steampunk I have read. I did not see several things coming including the ending, caught me totally off guard. I am eager for the next exciting installment.
